Tips for Self Portraits

Being a photographer sometimes makes it harder to get good photos of myself. I know how I would photograph it, but I can't always get the same angles and shots as I would being behind the camera. Having done a few "selfie" shoots I wanted to share some tips that have made my photos better every time.

  • TRIPOD- A tripod is such a fantastic tool to have in your arsenal. It really helps you to set your composition and plan the shots you want.
  • SMARTPHONE CONNECTION- One thing I really love about my camera is the wifi connection. It allows me to control my camera's live mode through my smartphone and is the best way to have accurate focus by simply selecting my face on my screen. If you don't have that ability with your camera you can set up an object where you plan to stand and use that to focus. I recommend usually using a larger f-stop such as 2.5 and above. It is kind of a hit and miss process, but will work eventually with a bit of patience.
  • ANGLES- Know your angles and any tips for basic portraiture. I like to angle my face slightly to the right and tip my chin up to elongate my neck and slim down my face.
  • HAVE FUN- The best photos really come from just having fun. Snoop is usually in the background or by me for most of my shoots. She really brings out the smiles in me.
